Flagler County Family Assistance Center (FCFAC)
"The Sheltering Tree"
Report by Lee Willman, Chair,
Board of Directors, January 20, 2010
We had a string of 13 continuous nights that the shelter was open.  For the 2009/2010 cold weather season we have been open a total of 16 nights, had 274 guests stay overnight, provided 560 meals, and had the help of 199 amazing volunteers.  Special thanks to all of our volunteers, Flagler Emergency Services and the American Red Cross during the recent cold spell.
The support from the community has been overwhelming.  We have received food, clothing, blankets, shoes, personal hygiene items and monetary donations.  Our clothing committee headed up by Lynn Hindman has logged 207 hours sorting donations and manning the clothes closet when the shelter has been open.  We have also been able to provide warm clothing and blankets to individuals in the community.
As you know, this is a life changing experience for all of us. I recently saw one of our guests after the shelter closed.  He was so excited as he had gotten a job.  He told me that staying at the shelter had changed his life.  I know that it has certainly changed my life.  He is anxious to become an active volunteer.
Flagler County Family Assistance Center will be at the upcoming Flagler home show on Jan 30 and 31st.  www.flaglerhomeshow.com  we want to encourage people to stop by our booth and we are also looking for volunteers to help man the booth.
We will also be participating in the point in time survey on Jan 25 and 26.  This is a count of the homeless in the county.  This is done in conjunction with the Volusia/Flagler Coalition for the Homeless.  The count is something that is done statewide.
We have some exciting fundraisers coming up.
  • In March we will be hosting a Soup and Song event which will feature a variety of soups and great live music.  Date to be announced.
  • On May 16th we will be conducting a food drive at the Daytona Cubs Family Day game.  We are looking into group tickets for the event as well.

  • The feasibility/possibility of the first annual golf tournament is being reviewed.  A professional golf event planner has offered their services to us.
